Reaching Joburg South through music

“The album centres on bringing our hallelujahs to praise God in all circumstances, even though we may not always feel like praising Him for all circumstances,” said JP.

SPENDING a few hours with the Cross Culture Worship group was indeed a pleasure, one from which I came away tapping my feet and feeling altogether in a happier place.

During 2013, the group, which was previously called Rhythm of Grace, released an album entitled, Storm, of which which they gave me a copy. As soon as I got into my car after the interview I couldn’t resist giving it a go, and it was great – so good in fact, I played it again the next morning on the way to the office!

During our interview in their new Glenvista based studio, Cross Culture Worship shared news about themselves and their new CD, named Thousand Hallelujahs after the theme song, which is being launched on July 30.

LIGHTING UP THE SOUTH: Cobus van Schalkwyk, Charlene and JP Pretorius, JD Treyvellan and Jan van Reenen.

The group introduced themselves: JP Pretorius (44), Charlene Pretorius (37), Cobus van Schalkwyk (34) and JD Treyvellan (26) with songs composed by Jan van Reenen. Absent was vocalist Cindy Snell, as well as other members of the extended group. All are involved in ministry at the Hatfield Christian Church Joburg South, that meets on Sundays at 9.30am at the Thaba Eco Hotel.

Thousand Halleluahs has been three years in the making and chatting to the group, I realised how the time and effort put into their new album must have impacted on all their lives. “Yes, it creates tension trying to balance ministry, work, family life and time spent in the studio, but it’s all worthwhile if we listen to the final product. We are super excited for the launch,” added Jan.

“The album centres on bringing our hallelujahs to praise God in all circumstances, even though we may not always feel like praising Him for all circumstances,” said JP. One of the songs, Broken Wings, composed and sung by Cobus, is a song for South Africa. “It’s about how God heals, restores and rebuilds us as individuals, families and a nation. There’s a lot of brokenness around that needs healing,” added Cobus.

Their song, Shine, will really get your feet tapping, “Shine, while the world is shaking, resonates how we feel,” said singer-song-writer JD.

All 13 songs are the group’s own compositions and have been tried and tested during services at Hatfield Christian Church Joburg South. I asked if both young and older people would enjoy the louder and upbeat songs. “Oh yes, some of our more mature members love the energetic song,” said Charlene.

The launch of the CD will also be a live DVD recording, taking place at Hatfield Christian Church Joburg Soutg on Sunday, July 30 at 6.30pm for 7pm. The entrance ticket will cost you R50 or R100 for entry and a copy of the CD. Thereafter the CD will cost R100 per copy. Entry tickets will be available at the door on the evening, but bookings can be done through Charlene on 010 612 0333 only between 9am and 1pm or by emailing Charlene at: admin@hatfieldjs.co.za

Join this celebration and shine while the world is shaking. Come sound your hallelujahs with theirs on 30 July.
