Ekurhuleni is very far away from being the best

I have constant problems with power outages, blocked drains causing sewage to overflow, bad water pressure, etc, etc.

THE Business Day newspaper recently ranked the City of Ekurhuleni first in their index on how well municipalities spend residents’ money.

“This reasserts our commitment to the social contract we have with the people of Ekurhuleni,” said the City’s Mayor, Mzwandile Masina.

“Business Day noted that the variation between municipalities largely boiled down to how well they were governed and whether or not the right people had been appointed to run the affairs of the municipalities,” added Themba Gadebe, the municipal spokesperson.

One resident, who will be named as Gunther, tax payer and resident, felt very strongly about it. Here is what he had to say: “I am not sure whether I should laugh, cry or be bloody furious about the news that the City of Ekurhuleni has been voted the best. Either it’s one massive mistake or this country is in a much more dire situation than ever thought before because if they are the best, we are truly doomed.

“Ekurhuleni has shown time and time again that service delivery is not a priority for them. I have lived in Alberton (moved from Europe) for more than 30 years and in the last 20 years or so it has just gotten worse and worse.

“I have constant problems with power outages, blocked drains causing sewage to overflow, bad water pressure, etc, etc. When you call Ekurhuleni’s customer care line, you either don’t get through at all, you hear someone picking up the phone and then hanging up or you just hear laughing and chatting – it sounds like a party on the other side.

“When someone ever bothers to come sort out the problem, it’s not fixed properly, it just happens soon after, constantly wasting countless billions of rands of taxpayers’ money.

“The infrastructure is shocking and they don’t upgrade, they maintain absolutely nothing, I could go on and on. If they are the best then we are in serious trouble,” Gunther said.
