ON August 3, two RECORD journalists had their day made after meeting Nicky Dee Mlambo, a waiter from Wimpy New Market.
He drew their attention with his bright, friendly smile and genuine interest in a conversation. Before a minute had passed, he was talking with them as if they had been friends for years – and he didn’t even know they were journalists!
Nicky is from Harare, Zimbabwe, but he now lives in Alberton. He is the middle child of three siblings and has two children of his own. He is not married. For two years, he has been working as a waiter at Wimpy New Market.
“I like being a waiter, because it’s my way of connecting with people and meeting different personalities,” said Nicky. “I’m definitely a people’s person.” He added that, despite his social needs being fulfilled, his job can have its challenges, too. “I have very little time for myself and to rest because my shifts can be long sometimes. Nevertheless, I am grateful.”
Nicky also enthused about his interest in music and how he dreams of being a DJ. “I recently got an instrument to help me make songs by myself,” he said.
“My favourite music used to be rap and hip-hop, but nowadays my taste in music is more refined – conscious reggae is where it’s at for me now. It’s the kind of music that just has you chilling, forgetting all of your worries as the sound sweeps you away. It’s even more enjoyable with an ice cold beer nearby.”
He told the RECORD that he would also make a great entrepreneur as he has experience in selling products. He used to manage a roadside stall where he sold food, cool drinks and snacks. He used to enjoy it a lot and would love to be able to start his own business.
His inspiration is former US president Barack Obama. “He is such a great man. He did everything to bring the world together. He always tried to combat racism and have every person treated equally. I wish to be like him.”
A little motto of encouragement for the readers from Nicky: “Always be happy.”
And that is how a conversation with a stranger can make your day. Remember to give a little smile next time you walk past a stranger. It’s free, brings some cheer into your day and, who knows – perhaps it will be the start of a new friendship!
