Pet theft awareness tips

Dogs and cats are stolen for various reasons.

THE Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) would like to warn people in the community against pet theft.

Dogs and cats are stolen for various reasons, bigger dogs for fighting or “bait” to make dogs they use for fighting very aggressive and smaller dogs as well as cats for training purposes.

Tips on how to prevent your pet(s) from being stolen:

  • Keep a close eye on your animals, always keeping them on a leash when out and about;
  • Do not leave pets unattended in the car;
  • Do not leave dogs (tied up or otherwise) outside a shop or other public places;
  • Consider micro-chipping your animal to assist in tracking them if the need ever arises;
  • Do not leave gates open, avoid pets getting out of your property.
