MIGNONETTE NIEWENHUISEN: “I used to be bullied myself and from personal experience, children need to speak to someone. Don’t be scared of a bully. One’s circumstances at home reflect how one behaves towards others.”
THE RECORD wandered into the streets of Alberton to find out what residents think about bullying in schools and how it should be addressed. Everyone agreed that circumstances at home play a big role.
KHUTSO MALWA: “A good parent teaches the child not to take bullies’ nonsense, but also not to bully others. Parents’ relationships play a big role in their children’s lives, so always treat each other with respect.”DUMELO MACHACHAMISA (with his son, Shalom): “Parents should be involved in their children’s lives and be aware of these things. There need to be more social workers at schools for kids going through trauma at home. These kids need special care.”MIKE BAH: “Children should be taught to be careful of bullies and to speak up when they are being bullied. Take care of your children and do your best to keep them safe.”PATRICIA JOHN: “This problem starts at home. Teachers have no control over bullies and are not allowed to do anything about this behaviour. Children must stay brave and speak up.”
