REFERRING to the front page article in the June 7 issue of the RECORD titled “Humble man (78) keeps municipal veld pristine”, George Enslin stopped by our offices on October 31 to reveal some disappointing news.
George Enslin, General Albertspark resident, is the man who has been keeping a piece of municipal veld in General Albertspark clean and beautiful using his own time, equipment and money, without anyone expecting him to do so.
He sadly let us know that, while he was about to finish cutting grass in the veld on October 31, his 50m extension cable into which he plugs the lawnmower, had been stolen.
Surprisingly, George was quite amused about the ordeal and said with an ironic smile: “This is just so funny and ironic because despite getting hope in our hearts because of people finally coming together and protesting crime in black clothing, this is still South Africa and the crime still continues.”
George then headed off to the shop again to spend another few hundred Rands to buy another 50m extension cable to keep a piece of land clean and beautiful out of pure consideration and care for the environment.
