Getting to know a Caxton IT guy

A typical day at work for Garrard may drive many people to a meltdown.

THE RECORD got to know one of their Caxton IT assistants, Garrard Venter. He loves his job and shares his story.

Garrard (34) is a resident from Boksburg who often visits Alberton to lend a helping hand.

He says: “I have an all-round job which ranges from fixing and updating systems and databases to checking broken printers and scanners. I check that everything ‘techy’ runs smoothly at our Caxton East and South branches and I also look after the cadets in training.”

A typical day at work for Garrard may drive many people to a meltdown. Many phone calls have to be answered and if there’s a problem, it has to be attended to immediately as Caxton local media have deadlines to meet. He seldom has quiet days, but when he does, he uses it to organise his miscellaneous work.

The best part of his job, Garrard says, is to meet different people, enjoy new experiences and learn something new each day.

Not only is IT his passion, but goodwill and fitness are too.

“I strive to be a good, healthy person; a better person than I was yesterday,” says Garrard. “I enjoy yoga, which is my meditation time and charity runs. I do what I can to help the community and I do so out of altruism and not for my own benefit or ego.”

Hobbies that Garrard enjoys in his offtime are watching Netflix, drifting, racing and motorbiking, hitting a few golf balls at the driving range, listening to his favourite alternative rock music and trying new and exciting things. He feels that the song Where My Heart Will Take Me by Russel Watson is the most relatable song to who he is.

He says his biggest inspiration in life is his father, Hennie Venter. They have been through many good and hard times together.

“My father is the best father anyone can ask for,” says Garrard. “He can always be counted on, no matter what. No matter what obstacles cross his path, he gets through it. He is my superhero.”

If Garrard could change the world, he would start by helping less fortunate people and vulnerable animals. He is a strong believer of empathy and compassion and says that if people could see each other’s souls instead of their appearances and be equal in that sense, the world would be a much better place.

He shares his favourite quote with the readers, one by Maya Angelou: “Do the best you can ‘til you know better. When you know better, do better.”

“Be you, be real and you will be successful,” he adds in conclusion.
