How to stop your baby’s tears

If your baby seems to be crying for no reason, here are a few ways to put an end to the tears.

YOUR baby might be hungry, have a dirty diaper or perhaps he or she is feeling a little feverish. If none of these are the case and your baby seems to be crying for no reason, here are a few ways to put an end to the tears.

• Something to suck on

A pacifier or even your finger (after you’ve washed your hands, of course) can do wonders for a crying baby.

• Cuddling

Your baby might miss the comfort of being warm and tight inside your womb. Hold your baby close to your chest or swaddle (wrap in a baby blanket) him or her and they might fall fast asleep.

• Music or singing

Play different kinds of music and see which kind your baby responds to best. This might calm him or her down. You can also try gently singing or humming a lullaby.

• Calming noises

Much like the ‘whooshing’ sounds that surrounded your baby while growing inside your womb, calming sounds such as flowing water, fountains or the shower could work effectively to end your baby’s crying.

• Fresh air

A little fresh air can do a lot of great things, such as intriguing your baby and stopping him or her from crying. Take baby outside and show him or her around to see the garden, trees, flowers, clouds or anything that might be interesting to a new human.

• Warm water

The warm, gentle water drops from the shower could calm down your baby, but only if he or she enjoys water. Try holding baby under a gently running shower. Make sure the water is not too hot or cold!

• Motion

Babies are often calm if they are having fun, and as most people know, babies just love being bounced, swung or rocked back and forth. Try sitting with your baby on an exercise ball, swing or rocking chair and let the motion commence!

• A massage

Everyone needs a massage from time to time, and even a baby can get tense. Give him or her the most gentle massage all over his or her little body using your thumbs and forefingers.

• Remember!

No matter how frustrated your crying baby makes you, never ever shake your baby! Approximately 1 000 babies die each year from shaken baby syndrome. To read more about shaken baby syndrome, follow this link: https://www.healthline.com/health/shaken-baby-syndrome.

• If nothing is working…

If you’ve tried all of the above tips to stop your baby from crying, and nothing seems to work, you might have a colic baby. Follow this link for tips on how to soothe a crying colic baby: https://www.babycenter.com/0_colic-how-to-cope_1369745.bc.
