Learn how to defend yourself

The feedback from the students was very positive.

A FREE self-defence training initiative was held at the Alberton Figures Finesse Modelling Studio in Randhart recently.

A total of 61 students attended the three sessions and received valuable information and practical exposure on how to defend themselves.

The training was made possible through Amanda da Silva from Standard Bank in conjunction with the Figures branch owner Melanie van den Heever. Adam Botha, also known as Chappies, from the Group Physical Security and Security Awareness at Standard Bank, trained Amanda and she saw the benefit of exposing her daughter Logan and other youngsters to similar training.

Logan da Silva came up with the idea that models need to know how to defend themselves in difficult situations after six robbers in their own home attacked her and her family. The current Miss Universe, our very own Demi-Leigh, was Logan’s inspiration after Demi-Leigh herself was also exposed to a situation where she could not defend herself and then went on to attend self-defence training classes.

The feedback from the students was very positive, with many of them demonstrating their newly acquired skills, saying they felt better equipped to deal with difficult situations now, such as bullying or harassment. The instructor, Chappies, was very impressed with the level of discipline and enthusiasm showed by the students as well as the calibre of quick understanding and adjusting to the various self-defence techniques.

GOOD WORK: Adam Botha (instructor), Logan Da Silva and her mom, Amanda Da Silva.

If anybody in the community is interested in attending or organising a self-defence training session, please contact Melanie at 083 446 9442 or Amanda at 072 959 1566.
