The island on 7th Avenue
EMM explains why this island had to be built, despite the inconvenience it is causing and will continue to cause.
THE RECORD recently did an article about the island that was built on 7th Avenue in Alberton North, which frustrates residents.
At the time of going to press Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) and other parties did not send comment.
However, in the meantime EMM’s response was received: “Despite the road signs indicating that no trucks should use the last section of the road due to its steep gradient, many heavy trucks use it anyway and it has happened on more than one occasion that a truck could not take off again at the top stop street.”
Gadebe further explained that in most cases the trucks either get stuck or slid back into the house on the corner, knocking down the street trees and the resident’s fence.
“Various meetings were held with the affected resident, who was extremely unhappy about the dangerous situation he was placed in. Seventh Avenue is not the only street leading to Elandshaven,” said Themba Gadebe.
Clr Alderman Bruna Haipel from the DA had the following to say: “In reply to your enquiry, let me explain the reasoning behind the closing off of the uphill section of 7th Avenue. This is due to the fact that, despite the road signs asking that no trucks use that last section of the road due to its steep gradient, many heavy trucks use it anyway and it has happened on more than one occasion that a truck could not take off again at the top stop street and either got stuck there or actually slid back into the house on the corner knocking down the street trees and the resident’s fence.
“We had various meetings with the affected resident who was extremely unhappy about the dangerous situation he was placed in. Please note that 7th Avenue is not the only street leading to Elandshaven. Hope this explains the matter,” she said.
