Bridge the Gap: 40 000 New Voters Register

This past Weekend was a voter registration weekend and the IEC opened various voting stations across Alberton and Ekurhuleni.

Every one over the age of 16 can register to vote. You can however only vote from the age of 18. The IEC declared the voter registration weekend as a huge success with more than 40 000 new people in Ekurhuleni registering as voters on the voters roll. In order to vote you have to be on the voters roll.

You only have to register once unless you move or your voting district boundary has changed. Due to the changes in the municipal demarcation there will be some changes to voting district boundaries and residents may be affected as a result of this. To check if you are registered and exactly where you are registered, residents can SMS their ID number to 32810.

This automated system of the IEC will send you a reply SMS with the detail of your registration status and exactly where you are registered to vote. If you are not registered to vote and you have missed the past voter registration weekend you can still register.

Voter registration takes place at the local Municipal Electoral office located in the Alberton CCC, but please remember to make an appointment.

Residents can call 011 999-2059 during office hours to make an appointment for registration on the voters roll. By law every eligible voter must apply in person and no online application can be made electronically, or via email.

Residents require a valid South African green barcoded ID book or new ID Smart Card to register to vote.

If you do not have an ID you can apply for a TIC (Temporary ID Certificate) at any Home Affairs office. The TIC is also accepted as a valid ID document for voter registration. For more information residents can visit the IEC website at www.iec.org.za.

During the fist half of 2014 all registered voters will be voting again for proportional representation in National and Provincial government. Only by voting we can have a representative government to create a better life for all.
Lets’ bridge the Gap and encourage everyone to register. Please email your municipal issues to me at Diamond.Neil@ekurhuleni.gov.za
