Hospice golf day raises a whopping R152 000
The efforts of 140 players and generous sponsors made this golf day a huge success.
IN what can only be described as one of the most successful golf days to date, held in aid of Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services, the tidy sum of R152 000 was raised for the charity on April 18.
The course at Reading Country Club was a buzz of activities as 140 players took to the field with the 2017 winners, Leon Deschamps and Frans van Tonder, emerging yet again as the champions on 47 points. The format of the competition was a Betterball Stableford.
An addition this year was the awarding of the Chantel Victor trophy to the ladies betterball team who scored the most points. Belinda Victor, mother of the late Chantel Victor, handed the trophy over to the winning pair, Shelley Daymond and Mariaan Vermeulen who came in on 44 points.
The internationally known jockey Piere Strydom, who is known in horse-racing circles as the One Man – 5 000 Winners title holder, and with numerous Durban July and Met winners under his belt, proved that he is also a golfer to take note of. Piere won the Beat the Pro competition on the Par 3, 15th hole, securing a weekend for two, all-inclusive, at the luxurious Mount Grace Hotel, kindly sponsored by Grayston Travel.
Stepping Stone Hospice provides specialist palliative care to patients and their families facing the challenges of life-limiting illnesses. The fund-raising team’s goal is to raise enough funds to allow for the extension of the existing In-Patient Unit in New Market Park, Alberton, in order to cope with the increasing need for palliative care in our communities. All funds raised through this golf day will now be added to their Brick Fund in order to realise the dream of a much bigger In-Patient Unit that can include an adolescent section.
“Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all our players, sponsors and individuals who so generously and unselfishly contributed to our organisation,” says Tersia Burger, CEO of Stepping Stone Hospice.
“Without the amazing support from our community of friends, we will mostly not be able to keep our doors open.”
