Stepping Stone Hospice explains about palliative care
The meeting was held at the Reading Country Club.
AS part of Stepping Stone Hospice’s campaign “Taking Hospice to the People”, CEO Tersia Burger addressed the Probus Club Meeting group on May 9 at Reading Country Club.
She explained the concept of palliative hospice care and tried to dispel some of the myths around it, the biggest one being that it is only applicable to the last weeks of life.
Palliative care is the care of patients with an active, progressive and far advanced disease. The focus of the care is the relief and prevention of suffering and ensuring quality of life.
“Hospice offers a support system for both the patient and his or her family. Hospice intends neither to hasten nor postpone death,” Burger explained.
The Probus Club Meeting group consists of retired business people and professionals, most of whom previously belonged to Rotary. They meet on the second Wednesday of every month at Reading Country Club.
For more information on the group, contact their president, Ken Mitch, on 083 276 2351. If you would like a Hospice staff member to address a group that you belong to, kindly email Tersia Burger at tersia@steppingtonehospice.co.za for details.
