The Cantare Children’s Choir
One that will long be remembered is “Alice in Wonderland”.
THE Cantare Children’s Choir is one of South Africa’s young jewels. Not only is it famous for its outstanding singing but it is one of the first and successful creations of the new diversity in South Africa.
The choir was founded in 1995 by Ida Strydom who has been the conductor to date. Her lifelong passion for choir music has firmly founded the character of the choir.
What makes the choir so unique is the fact that it represents all the cultural languages and traditions of the South African nation, hence the creation of the development choirs, the special junior choir, the Harmonia Girls’ Choir and last but not least the crown jewel, the Cantare Children’s Choir.
Seeing them perform is a true reflection of a bright shining rainbow. Their singing and movements move the spectator with a keen desire to participate in their activity. Sitting still with a stern face would not be possible at all.
Apart from offering such world-class entertainment, the choir has a long list of accolades that makes each member proud to be called a Cantare singer.
The choir has participated in the World Choir Games in 2004, 2006 and 2008 and brought home a fine selection of gold, silver and bronze medals. Other international competitions include the International Eisteddfod in Wales, the VII Advent and Christmas Festival in Bratislava as well as the Golden Voices of Montserrat Festival and Competition, Lloret de Mar, Spain. All these events yielded a rich harvest of gold and silver accolades.
On the local front, the choir was awarded the title of Outstanding Children’s Choir by the South African Choral Society. The choir has hosted international choirs visiting South Africa and they regularly appear on radio and television and other local festivals such as the Music of the Mountains Festival with the Drakensberg Boys Choir.
Competitions are not the only focus of the choir. They have staged musicals and other shows. One that will long be remembered is Alice in Wonderland.
