Councillor not impressed with dumping situation
Ward 37 Councillor Bruna Haipel continues to raise concern for all the waste and dump in the area.
“Illegal Dumping is one of the most despicable and costliest practices of educated and uneducated society in this country.”
“In this day and age when refuse is collected regularly from homes, dustbins are provided in many areas of the CBD, in parks and on street corners. There should be no need for people to thoughtlessly pollute their environment by just dropping their refuse wherever they are, throwing it out of their car window or hiding it under bushes. I am not sure if this is just a lack of education or a form of rebellion. Suffice it to say that our towns and open spaces often look disgusting,” said Ms Haipel.
She also raises concern for businesses with truckloads of debris that just ignore the fact that there are transfer stations available and dumping grounds where they can offload their rubble. Very often free of charge. So as not to travel a few kilometres further, they look for a convenient spot to offload their rubbish taking no notice of the environment.
Haipel continued by saying, “Are they totally unaware that this causes pollution and rodent infestation? I don’t think so. They just don’t care!
“While I am not exonerating Council from having to keep the environment clean, I would like to point out that the cleaning up of illegal dumping is costing this Metro millions every year and ultimately the community must foot the bill.”
