Brackendowns domestic helpers received safety tips
Domestic helpers were urged to keep their panic buttons on them at all times.
DOMESTIC workers were urged to be safety-conscious, especially with the recent increase of house robberies in Alberton.
A Domestic Watch meeting was held on June 13 in Brackendowns, where Linda Reeder, community development manager for Fidelity ADT, and members of Brackendowns SAPS spoke to the domestic workers.
They offered them basic safety tips, such as not allowing strangers into the property for any reason even if they state they need to read electricity or water meters or to deliver a parcel.
Attendees were asked to keep their panic buttons on them at all times, especially when going outside to hang up the washing. They were also told to lock doors behind them when going outside and to not put up a fight if suspects get into the house, especially if they are armed.
SAPS representatives also commented on walking in the street and encouraged the attendees to walk in well-lit areas, not to take shortcuts or advertise their valuables like walking and talking on their cellphones.
Reeder added that it’s important for employers to protect their domestic staff by making sure they have panic buttons and test these regularly. He also said that workers should know exactly who is coming to the house on a particular day.
She emphasised the importance of having contact details available and making sure that your domestic helper can reach you in the event of an emergency and concluded: “It is so important to have a good relationship with all your employees, as they are the eyes and ears of our neighbourhoods during the day. Let’s all make the effort to keep our employees, homes and neighbourhoods safe.”
