Safety tips for residents and domestic workers

The South African Police Services urges residents to stay vigilant at all times.

DURING the last few months there has been a lot of criminal activity in Alberton where domestic workers were involved.

A few bodies, of domestic workers, were found, domestic workers were working with criminals and also a situation where a domestic worker kidnapped a 13-month-old baby. It is always important to know who you appoint to look after your children or even after your house when you are not there.

Here are some safety tips from SAPS:

• Know the SAPS emergency numbers. SAPS Brackendowns 011 617 5600/28. SAPS Alberton 011 861 6800.

• Do not open the door or gate for any strangers.

• Do not allow any person on the premises without prior arrangement of the homeowner.

• Never tell strangers that you are home alone.

• When attending to a stranger at the gate, make sure that there is enough distance between you and that person.

• Always keep the doors locked, even when you go outside to hang washing or put out the dustbin.

• Always have your cellphone with you but keep it concealed.

• Never give the homeowner’s cellphone number to any person asking for it.

• Do not allow people from the street to enter the premises to drink water or give them food.

• Carry a whistle around your neck and blow it very hard in case of an emergency.• Know how to activate the alarm and use the panic buttons but always keep it concealed.

• Keep a lookout for suspicious vehicles and write down the registration number.

• When any person alleges to be there to fix something, contact the SAPS immediately and do not open any doors or gates for them.

• If a person says he is a police officer, request to see his/her police ID card.

• Always be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles and persons at your neighbours across the street and next door.

• Know the domestic worker next door for emergency response.
