GALLERY: Shelter women empowered with knowledge and career choices

A sense of empowerment filled the atmosphere.

IN the spirit of Mandela Day, young women from the Bellevue-based Frida Hartley Women’s Shelter were empowered on Tuesday, July 17, by the owners of a public relations firm, Ngage, in Meyersdal.

Ngage invited young women from the Frida Hartley Women’s Shelter to their premises to spoil them and their children. Also, Ngage provided the women with informal mentorship.

BUBBLE FUN: The children bubbled with joy when the bubble machine was brought outside.

The Frida Hartley Women’s Shelter is a non-profit organisation. It exists to empower women by providing them and their children with accommodation and psycho-social support and employment opportunities and training. The shelter also provides nutrition and care to the children. This also provides mothers with the time they need while job hunting.

At Ngage’s premises, the women were invited into a warm room and were treated to breakfast snacks and warm beverages. After that, they were introduced to morning guest speakers.

WAFFLE BAR: The ladies and children at the shelter were treated with a wonderful waffle bar for the day.

Speakers included a journalist and the editor of RECORD, Monique van Wyk. Carina van der Walt and Kate Wevell and Irene Newengo of Performa Recruitments also spoke.

The RECORD speaker spoke about journalism and what it was like to work for the media. Kate’s spoke about her role as a professional in the recruitment industry. She provided tips on how to prepare a CV. Irene spoke about Christian values and the importance of involving Jesus Christ in every aspect of one’s life.

SPEAKING: Kate Wevell and Kyle Anderson answered some of the women’s questions.

The women appreciated the talks, listened eagerly and raised pertinent questions. Everyone learned something new that morning, and they were filled with a sense of empowerment. The morning at Ngage’s premises ended in a light-hearted manner. Everyone travelled back to the shelter.

DONATIONS: A room full of donations from Ngage was given to Frida Hartley Women’s Shelter.

Ngage treated the women with the goodies – including perfume, food and clothes. The children were also spoiled as they enjoyed the thrill of being in a jumping castle, and enjoying the bubble machine. They were also treated to clothes and toys. It was a joyful day for everyone.

HAPPY LEARNERS: The ladies had a wonderful time learning new things from the speakers.

“We would like to thank the shelter for allowing us to help them in this small way,” said Thapelo Phukuje on behalf of Ngage. “Not only did it benefit them, it also gave us at Ngage joy and satisfaction. We look forward to the next Mandela Day.”

SHARING GOD’S WORD: Irene Newengo.
LOOKING FABULOUS: The women looked beautiful and ready to be empowered.
HAPPY CHILDREN: The children from the shelter had a jolly time on the jumping castle.
