THREE metro police officers became fully-fledged members of the EMPD Equestrian Unit following an intensive six-week basic course under the tutelage of the local service provider Pro-Equestrian based in Fairleads, Benoni.
The three recruits gained their badges on August 16 at a ceremony held at the EMPD Equestrian Unit main office at Petit in Benoni.

The Equestrian Unit started in 2005 with only five members. Currently, the total complement is 15 including three female officers. Of the three graduates who gained badges and were presented with certificates one is female and two are male.
The Equestrian Unit forms part of the Specialised Units of the EMPD whose duties include patrolling designated areas on horseback, enforcing laws and providing crowd control to maintain public safety. They may also be involved with other duties such as search and rescue, traffic control and the pursuit of suspects.
