Christmas decor trends for 2018

"The leading festive trends make for a calmer, more relaxed festive season."

NEED a little inspiration on how to decorate for Christmas this year? Never worries – the RECORD asked Katy Meurs, a resident from Alberton and services manager at Decorex SA, a few questions about this year’s Christmas decor trends.

AR: What are the leading trends in Christmas decor this year?

KM: This year we have seen a big change. People are no longer sticking to the traditional gold, red and green, but rather incorporating non-traditional colours such as soft pinks and blues. The leading festive trends mentioned below make for a calmer, more relaxed festive season.

• Minimalistic, with sparkles

• Circles, mirror and glass

• Monochromatic and geometric

• Dried botanic and natural textures

• Greenery and vegetation

• Personalised touches

• Sleep sanctuaries

AR: Which colour schemes do you think are the best to decorate with for 2018?

KM: Currently, soft and light colour schemes are the trend. Whites, silvers and blush pinks keep the look very soft. By adding your range of fairy lights to the mix, the subtlety of the decor on the tree and around the home will be enhanced.

AR: If you want to be unique and different with your decorations this year, what would you do?

KM: The world is moving more and more towards a sustainable environment and it is important to keep in mind that recycling is a big deal, even during Christmas time. Try using only brown, biodegradable paper to wrap presents from now on. The brown paper creates a beautiful canvas for DIY gift-wrap patterns.

AR: For 2018, do you think coloured or plain white fairy lights are best to use?

KM: Definitely white fairy lights. We live in such a busy world with so much going on around us. For some much-needed peace and tranquillity, calm white lights will be best to decorate with this year.

AR: What decor sells best at the moment?

KM: Home decor items are the biggest craze. Table decor items, crockery, cutlery, glassware, candles, Christmas tree accessories, wreaths and tinsel – these items are the top sellers at the moment. If you’re home this holiday season, it’s a good idea to give your home a little facelift with a fresh coat of paint and perhaps some funky decor like scatter cushions and fresh greenery. Happy Holidays!

BE ECO-FRIENDLY: Be sustainable – why not wrap gifts in brown, biodegradable paper? Have fun decorating the paper first, making the gift recipient feel extra special. (Image: Pixabay)
