UPDATE: WATCH – Bertie’s adopted and loved

"Bertie is doing so well and even though he still has a very long road ahead to recovery, that’s okay because he is a fighter.”

BERTIE, the miracle dog, was recently welcomed into his new home by his new family.

He was picked up by a kind-hearted man who drove past him in the Germiston area on December 3. The man then notified his friend who then sent out an emergency help creed to WhatsApp groups.

Louise Leonard from Animal Resource South Africa also messaged the Furry Godmother group via Facebook. This is how Vicky Welman-Gerber from the Furry Godmother heard about Bertie.

AT THE VET: Bianca Peens holds Bertie in her arms at the Brackenhurst Veterinary Clinic.

She asked for help from Zuerina Venter from Animal Protection Network. Since then, Bertie recovered at the Brackenhurst Vet. He was found in a terrible condition.

“He was skinny and weak, but today he can walk by himself and he is stronger,” said Bianca.

On December 18, he was adopted by ER24 paramedic, Bianca Castleman Peens. She is also the one who helped the organisations transport an injured Great Dane dog, Joe Balloo, via ambulance from Mulbarton Vet to Brackenhurst Vet.

“Bertie was hesitant at first to walk out the door but once he was on Bianca’s lap in the car and the seat belt around him you could see him relax,” Bianca said.

WELL-LOVED: Bertie and Bianca adores and cherishes each other.

Vicky added that Bertie is doing so well and even though he still has a very long road ahead to recovery. That’s okay because he is a fighter.

“Thank you Bianca for giving Bertie his forever home and for caring for him,” she said.

“He is a miracle dog today thanks to Allan Surrier, Bianka Fereira, general support group, Zuerina Venter, Sharon Huson, Dr Ajit, Dr Roxanne, Dr Nick and Dr Candice. Thank you also to all the assistants and reception at Brackenhurst Vet, Ursula Hope, Karolien Theron, Roger, private donors (you know who you are), corporate donors like Acana, Lauren Nightingale and Buy Raw For Pets, APN (Animal Protection Network),Vicki Potts Nicholson and Furry Godmothers, Louise Leonard and Animal Recourse South Africa.”

She continued: “To every person who cared, brought him love and spoils, thank you. Bertie fought for life, not just for himself, but for other voiceless too.”

Bertie has been with Bianca for nearly a month now and he has gained 5.5kg and with it came some attitude. According to Bianca Bertie does not like to be alone and does not just want to hear her, he needs to see her too.

CUDDLES: Bertie snuggles up against his new owner, Bianca Peens.

“He raises his voice at me for not rubbing his head so he can nap,” she said with a loving smile.

“I get this same tone of voice if I do anything other than sit or lay by him. He has now resorted to getting up to come find me if he can’t see me and I just answer him.”
