BREAKING NEWS: Woman gives birth on pavement in Fore Street, New Redruth

The mother and new born baby were taken to the Clinton Hospital where they were stabilised and transferred to Natalspruit Hospital.

Stepping Stone Hospice “You are Not Alone” has yet again been demonstrated today (January 31) by the fast actions of the charity shop team when a mother gave birth on the pavement in front of Stepping Stone Hospice’s shop in Fore Street in New Redruth.

Chris Nel, Stepping Stone Hospice’s retail supervisor, jumped into action when he saw the mother struggling to walk and as he explains “while I was watching her, the baby just seemed to drop out”.

Chris’s experience as a First Aider Level 3, came in handy as he aided the mother, Felda Ngubeni and helped the baby to start breathing.

“This is the first time I helped at a birth, and whilst there were a few tense moments before the ambulance arrived with the little one stop breathing and I had to resuscitate her, I can honestly say that this was an incredibly humbling experience”. said Chris Nel, Stepping Stone Hospice’s Retail Supervisor

Brenda Peach, retail manager, made sure the mother was comfortable whilst Chris and the paramedics from Med Help Emergency Services and National Paramedics cared for the baby.

The mother and new born baby were taken to the Clinton Hospital where they were stabilised and transferred to Natalspruit Hospital.
Family members of the mother promised to bring Stepping Stone Hospice news of how Felda and her new born little girl is doing.
