Dysfunctional traffic lights cause delays

Still nothing has been done about the traffic lights in the Alberton area.

NON-OPERATIONAL traffic lights in the Alberton area are causing a headache for many residents.

“It is becoming an absolute nightmare to travel through Alberton on a daily basis. Traffic lights’ turning signals at various intersections are no longer operational and cause serious congestion during peak times. This also increases the risk of accidents at these intersections dramatically,” said an irate motorist who wishes to remain anonymous.

Traffic lights are still not working at the Dan Jacobs Street and Vereeniging Road intersection, the Van Til Street and Vereeniging Road intersection, the JG Strijdom Road and Delphinium Street intersection, the JG Strijdom Road and Potgieter Street intersection and the Potgieter Street and Dan Jacobs intersection. Some of these lights have been out of order since 2018.

The resident also told the RECORD that it does not help to report the traffic lights as nothing is done.

Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson, said that the traffic lights along JG Strijdom Road are vandalised and traffic lights along Vereeniging Road are off due to cable faults on the supply side.

“Vandalism is a challenge because it affects budgeted plans for other service delivery requirements, which may delay the fixing of the vandalised infrastructure. We have, however, investigated and found the supply to the traffic lights to be in order. As a matter of high priority, we will work on fixing the actual traffic lights as soon as budget becomes available,” he said.

According to Gadebe, there are officials deployed to locate the fault and commence with repairs.
