Alberton SPCA needs help for upgrade

Alberton SPCA requests donations from the public to complete a project that is aimed at improving its clinic.

ALBERTON SPCA requests donations from the public to complete a project that is aimed at improving the centre.

The SPCA is yet to start upgrading its clinic to meet the new South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) regulations in the upcoming weeks. The centre will be revamped to improve the work environment, workflow and hygiene for the animals.

The upgrade will include creating a separate preparation room, tiling out the entire clinic for cleanliness and fitting new cages for the sick and injured animals.

OLD CAGES: John Kamanga, a worker at the SPCA, shows the RECORD the clinic’s older cages which will also be upgraded in the new developments.

Upgrading of the facility will also allow more animals to be treated for sterilisation and offer a room where animals can be kept.

Among numerous developments, the centre plans to change cat boarding areas which will enable people to bring more cats to the clinic.

Lauren Martens, a fund-raising committee member at SPCA, said the project was going to be a big one and assistance from the community would be appreciated.

“This is quite a large undertaking and we are appealing to the community to assist us if possible. We specifically need tiles, about 45 square metres. The tiles do not necessarily have to match in colour, as long as they are non-slippery,” she said.

DEVELOPMENT: Dr Caryn Rademeyer shows the RECORD cages which will be tiled completely to promote hygiene.

She also appealed to steel companies that may be able to assist with supplying and fitting new cages.

“We would love to get stainless steel cages because they will be of benefit to the SPCA for disease control. All donations will be gratefully accepted,” she added.

Those interested in helping or finding out more about the upgrade can contact Christine Cornall on 082 087 5829 or SPCA general manager Kingstone Siziba on 011 907 1568.
