Draft IDP and municipal budget made known

The draft budget was made known at the Alberton Civic Centre on April 4.

THE Public was invited to comment on the reviewed 2017 to 2021 IDP and draft municipal budget for 2019/20 to 2021/22 on April 3.

The draft budget was delivered in Alberton Civic Centre where the public was asked to give their remarks and considerations.

The capital budget is used for things such as construction, upgrading of roads and electrifying settlements. The capital budget for the period is R7.8-billion, of which R957.6- million is internally generated, R.8 billion from government grants and the rest is from loans taken by the city.

The operating budget for the period is R41.3 billion. Internally generated revenue constitutes R32.7 billion. Government grants fill the rest of the budget consisting of R5.8 billion from operating grants and R2.8 from capital grants.

Current needs identified from the IDP reviews in September 2018 are categorised and are as follows:

• Need for speed humps or traffic calming was identified in ward 58.

• Need for water and sewer projects or fire hydrants was identified in wards 38 and 106.

• Needs for tarring, upgrade of roads, stormwater drains and paving or a pedestrian bridge was identified in every Alberton ward.

• Upgrades to parks, stadia, libraries, sports fields, swimming pools or construction of guard houses were needed in ward 37,53 and 94.

• Work on a clinic was requested for wards 37 and 38.

• Construction of or upgrading of a taxi rank was requested for wards 58 and 106.

• Housing development was requested in ward 53.

Needs not addressed

Various residents also raised their concerns regarding specific needs that they feel were not adequately addressed. The various responsible departments were notified and said that they would look into the matter.

Please note that the budget is still a draft and items can still be added to it.
