Football development programme launches in Alberton
Three young players will be selected from Alberton and the surrounds as finalists to potentially train with Chelsea and win a contract with Orlando Pirates MDC.
SHIELD Sbonis’iDiski football development programme held its launch scouting clinic at Alberton Football Club on April 6.
The Shield Sbonis’iDiski football development programme scouts young soccer players from 10 sectors across the country to have the opportunity of a lifetime.
This is the third year the Sbonis’iDiski programme will be taking place. Following the scouting process, three talented soccer stars to be will have the opportunity to go and train with the coaches from Chelsea Football Club at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground. There one individual will be selected to be signed for the Orlando Pirates MDC team.
Players from Alberton and surrounding areas in Gauteng came together at Alberton Football Club for a day of training headed by the Shield Sbonis’iDiski coaches and Orlando Pirates coaches.
Players were given a briefing on how the Sbonis’iDiski programme works as well as receiving some advice and hands-on coaching from the recognised coaches present.
The day was not only an opportunity for the players to show what they can do but a platform for learning for all.
“The Shield Sbonis’iDiski campaign is a project that is more focused on giving youngsters a lifetime opportunity,” said Dumisane Thusi, head coach of Shield Sbonis’iDiski. “Its to open more doors for the youngsters.”
According to Thusi regional coaches will be identifying three players from all the regions who will take part in a final week in Pretoria where coaches from Shield, Orlando Pirates and Chelsea Football club will identify the three players who will train at Chelsea and finally the winning player who will receive a contract opportunity with Orlando Pirates MDC.
One of the Orlando Pirate coaches helping the players on the day, Johannes Khomane, said young players are more flexible than the older players and more able to adapt. He also said that at a younger age they benefit a lot more from the training and guidance.
The Alberton region will now be on the lookout for three players from the area to name for the final group and they will be announced close to the end of June.
