#IMadeMyMark: Antoinet shares what she remembers about the first democratic election day

“To the young ones, if you want to save South Africa and if you want a better future, make sure that you vote for the change you want to see.”

“I REMEMBER the first democratic election day in 1994 like it was yesterday,” said Antoinet Steenkamp (65).

She was only 44-years-old and not only was it an exciting time for her, but on that day she and her husband, Willem, also received the news that their brother-in-law died.

“So we had to deal with death in the family and also go and stand in the very long queues to make our mark,” she said.

According to her general elections were held in South Africa between April 26 and 29 in 1994.

“It was the first time that citizens of all races were allowed to take part.”

Antoinet made it her goal to vote every election year as she feels that there is still hope for her beloved country.

“I am planning to vote again this year,” she said.

She also said that she did not force one of her children to vote as she feels that it should be one’s own choice.

“So many things in South Africa has changed for the worst and yes I am also one of those citizens who are frustrated with the current situation in the country. It actually breaks my heart to even talk about the past as it was not nearly as bad as it is in today’s life. So I can understand why people do not vote, but for me it is a responsibility that I have,” she added.

Her message for young South Africans is to always follow their heart, even when voting.

“To the young ones, if you want to save South Africa and if you want a better future, make sure that you vote for the change you want to see,” Antoinet concluded.
