WATCH: Alberton’s Street Store gives needy a choice

The Street Store is a nationwide project which is headed in Alberton by Doxa Deo Meyersdal.

On the crisp morning of May 18, volunteers from all walks of life got together to open the Street Store at Alberton Dam.

The concept of the store is to take donated clothing and shoes, clean and ready them and then give the needy of Alberton the opportunity to “shop” for the items that they want.

The Street Store is a nationwide project which is headed in Alberton by Doxa Deo Meyersdal.

Every patron on the day had the opportunity to take one jacket, a shirt or dress, a pair of pants and a pair of shoes of their choice. At the Street Store at Alberton Dam, 1 088 people received the opportunity to choose the clothing they want and were given food on the day.

The day was touching for both the ushers and patrons. Jan Pretorius walked hand in hand with Dion Hendricks to help him choose and hear his story.

“The whole purpose behind the Street Store is to bring dignity back to the people,” said Lenro Jacobs, one of the organisers behind the Street Store.

“Many times people get things from the community, but there’s no choice in what they get. If it’s a little faded or broken, it doesn’t matter. Today everything is neat and in good condition.”

The touching part of the day was the smiles of the people. Every person that went through the store went with an usher who helped them and listened to their stories and experiences.

People had the opportunity to shop for the perfect garment for them. Here Vainie Makhafola is choosing some clothes with the help of Danielle Havenga.

The smiles came not only from the people from the store, but also from the volunteers who shared in the joy of the patrons and the wonder of the children being able to choose something of their very own.

Every patron took their time to choose the right objects for them and the happiness when the right jacket or pair of shoes was chosen was palpable.

Many thanks were said to those who made a difference.
