[GALLERY+VIDEO]: Alberton Boulevard undergoes renovations

According to ward councillor alderman Bruna Haipel, the boulevard was no longer 'friendly' and she went from pillar to post trying to attain funds to renovate it over the past 10 years.

ALBERTON Boulevard was constructed in the late 1980s and the aim was to convert a section of Voortrekker Road that runs past the Alberton City Shopping Mall into a pedestrian-friendly zone.

Over time, the boulevard fell into disrepair and lost its appeal for many Albertonians.

According to ward councillor alderman Bruna Haipel, the boulevard was no longer ‘friendly’ and she went from pillar to post trying to attain funds to renovate it over the past 10 years.

“Alberton Boulevard renovations have been on my Integrated Development Planning (IDP) because it needed a serious upgrade,” said Haipel.

The recent renovations will extend to the full length and breadth of the boulevard.

Haipel apologised to tenants and shopkeepers on the boulevard front for the inconvenience caused by the renovation.

“Everyone affected by the ongoing renovation, as a ward councillor I offer my sincere apologies for inconveniences caused, but please bear with it as it will be worth it in the end,” she said.

Ward committee member Christopher de Jager told the RECORD that the renovations will bring back the essence of the boulevard and it will return to the pedestrian-friendly zone it was before.
