WATCH: Water pipe leakage in Alberton has lasted for two years

Alberton residents raised their frustrations on an ongoing leaking water pipe which has led to a meeting between the Alberton Afriforum and the Department of Water and Sanitation on May 29.

RESIDENTS have taken to social media to air their concerns about a major water leak which is not being attended to.

Alberton residents raised their frustrations about the leaking water pipe. This led to a meeting between the Alberton AfriForum and the Department of Water and Sanitation on May 29.

The meeting, which was attended by a few community members, touched on the seriousness of the water pipe leak, and the measures to be taken to ensure the pipe was repaired.

The leaking water pipe is believed to supply Alrode and surrounding areas of actual drinking water.

Henk Du Preez, a chairperson of AfriForum Alberton, said they would give the Department of Water and Sanitation time to repair the leakage.

“The leaking pipe is the main feed which supplies water in most areas. After we spoke to Hendrik Groenewald, the chief engineer at the Department of Water and Sanitation, we were ensured that repairs should be complete in about 12 weeks. Although the leak should stop in four weeks, we will give them time to repair the leak,” Du Preez said.

Rumours on social media, claiming there was an electric wire in the small stream of water, was found to be untrue.

Riaan Strydom, an AfriForum Alberton reaction member, raised his concerns. “The seriousness of this water pipe leak should be taken into consideration. One could drive a hatchback car into that hole and it would be completely submerged. I’m not even exaggerating,” he said.

Ward 38 Clr Malcolm Maifala told the RECORD that any water leakages should be reported on time and would be attended to. “All water leaks should be reported to the call centre when noticed. We will help where we can,” he said.
