Silwerkroon pensioner lends Choc a helping hand

Marge van Eck from Silwerkroon Old Age Home in Raceview donated 39 beanies to the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation on July 2.

A PENSIONER’S wish to make a difference for those suffering from cancer has finally come true.

Marge van Eck from Silwerkroon Old Age Home in Raceview donated 39 beanies to the Childhood Cancer Foundation (Choc) on July 2. Her donation was in addition to the 50 beanies she had recently handed to the foundation towards the end of May.

The passionate knitter’s good deeds were led by the loss of her late daughter, who died from cancer at the age of 18.

She then took it upon herself to help make a difference in the lives of those with cancer.

Marge intends on knitting more beanies to keep little heads warm.

She plans to expand her work and go as far as knitting jerseys.

“The work that I do is amazing, and what keeps me going is the fact that I get to make a difference to these children.

“I will keep knitting anything that will keep these children warm, from jerseys to scarves,” she said.

She said she knits about three beanies a day and puts her creativity into knitting patterned beanies.

Tongai Madzukuture, who accepted the beanies on behalf of Choc, commended Marge for her generosity.

“Having to help someone doesn’t necessarily mean that you should hand out money. It is the little gestures that count.

“People can help Choc in many ways, and Marge has set that example,” he said.
