GALLERY: Alberton cares on Mandela Day
To celebrate Mandela Day, community members and organisations took time to show generosity to others
It only took Albertonians 67 minutes of their time to make a difference in the lives of others. To celebrate Mandela Day, community members and other concerned stakeholders took their time to give back to the Alberton community – either through giving to those who need it most, or raising awareness of the plights of others.
Mall of The South
The #HelpThyNeighbour team that includes Howden Africa, Mall of the South, Pam Golding Properties Alberton and Johannesburg South and Sojo (South of Johannesburg Business and Tourism) partnered with Gold Reef City and the HELP Forum to collect nonperishable foods, toiletries and cleaning materials for Meals on Wheels in Alberton.
The #HelpThyNeighbour team donated a collective amount of R110 000 worth of items to Meals on Wheels.
Meals on Wheels branches were overwhelmed with the amount of goods received as they have never received so much before.
Mall of the South’s centre manager, Hester Smith, said it was humbling when the community unites to support those in need.
Manners4Minors
The Manners4Minors hosted a blanket drive in support by other stakeholders, where they donated 733 blankets to Alberton Tutela.
The blankets will be donated to the less fortunate.
Donna Cousins, organiser, said she was overwhelmed by the whole initiative. “I just had an idea one day and I thought to myself that this could be done. I am so happy that so many people can sleep warm,” she said.
Checkers Hyper, Mall at Newmarket
The staff of Checkers Hyper New Market donated toiletries to Amcare for their victim empowerment programme.
Alberton SPCA
Albertonians came in their numbers for the SPCA’s sterilisation campaign, which was offered at an affordable price. The community also got a chance to take the clinic’s pets for a walk, while others offered their services to help make a difference.
Pam Golding
Pam Golding property chose Amcare to make a difference to the lives of others and donated clothes for Amcare’s annual clothing drive.
Alberton Clicks
Staff of Alberton Clicks took to the streets to promote healthy living as they offered free BP and glucose checking as they stationed themselves outside Alberton City.
Those that passed by were also offered sandwiches as part of the group’s act of selflessness.
Parklands High School
Learners from Parklands High School spent their time handing donations to Alberton Child Welfare.
Child Welfare’s social workers also received a musical item performance by the school’s choir.
Zeeneth Domingo, a manager at Child Welfare, thanked a group of learners. “We are grateful that these learners took their time to help to make a difference.”
The group’s Mandela Day celebration also supported the school’s fund-raiser.
