Taking Kilimanjaro head on to raise funds

On a mission to climb Kilimanjaro in September to raise funds for the medically underprivileged.

NARESH Kuverjee, Hemisha Makan, Payal Desai, Dr Arno Strydom and Rohit Desai will soon take on the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro.

All five of them are from the Southern Suburbs Hindu Cultural Society (SSHCS) and will embark on this exhilarating journey in September to raise at least R1-million for the medically underprivileged.

As a part of its campaign, the SSHCS has teamed up with the Smile Foundation to assist children with cleft palate, burn wounds and other facial deformations.

In addition, SSHCS has also teamed up with VISION 2020 to assist people who require cataract operations.

It is also their intention to assist the physically challenged with wheelchairs, prosthetics and more.

The team will be following the seven-day Machame route, departing on September 20 and returning on September 28.

About SSHCS

The SSHCS, an NPO, was established in 1994 and has, over the years, provided a cultural and social service to the Hindu and larger community in the South of Johannesburg.

This service includes the hosting of religious events, such as Shivraati, Krihna Jayanti and Navraati, among others.

SSHCS has also embarked on a number of community projects, such as the Community Health Day, the Annual Winter Collection Drive, the Annual Underprivileged Feeding Schemes and the hosting of seminars.

Charity organisations that they help on a regular basis include St Mary’s Children’s Home, TLC Corp, Amazing Grace Children’s Home and Johannesburg Children’s Home.

In the joy of others, lies our own

The team has been training for their climb since November last year, and each member of the team has funded themselves for the entire journey.

Rohit Desai is a motivational speaker and has recently had a miraculous recovery from pneumonia.

At the age of 66, he has decided that he wants to do something to make a real difference in the lives of others, as he himself feels he has been given a second chance.

All members of the team have their community at heart and believe that through this miraculous deed and the help and donations from others they can make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Donations can be paid directly into SSHCS’ bank account: FNB The Glen, account name: Southern Suburbs Hindu Cultural Society, account type: Business Money Market, account number: 6244 105 2248, branch code: 259 605. Your reference: KiLi
