WATCH: South Crest stream creates an unpleasant smell for residents
An ever-flowing stream in South Crest has had residents complain that it creates an awful smell in the area.
THE foul smell coming from the stream in South Crest has had a few residents complaining.
They also claim that the smell gets worse during warmer weather conditions.
The stream flows throughout all South Crest complexes, going all the way down to the interior of Alberton.
A resident in one of the complexes experiencing the unpleasant smell, believes it is caused by an overflown sewer which flooded into the stream.

According to the resident in the area, the sewerage is stuck in between the rocks of the river.
Liezel Du Plessis, another South Crest resident, told the RECORD that the smell is unbearable and has been going on for months.
“You cannot even open a door in our complex. The smell pulls through everything.
“It’s horrible and we have tried putting in an all-purpose cleaner, but it’s not helping.
“We have called and asked for assistance and nothing is being done about this,” she said.
She also said that in one incident fiber installers once complained about the smell, making it hard for them to carry on with their work.

Alderman Bruna Haipel, Ward 106 councillor, said she was aware of the issue.
“I have reported it to Hendrik Groenewald of our Water Department. He and Smuts Marais of Water Quality Department went on site to inspect the area. They reported back to me two days ago.
“There is pollution coming from the Johannesburg side as well as an overflowing sewer which is hidden in the bushes,” she said.
She said Marais has escalated the problem to Johannesburg water and they have promised to look into the issue.
“I have asked residents of South Crest to keep me updated if the problem does not get rectified in a few days,” she added.
