City of Ekurhuleni responds to recent power outages in Alberton

Following interruptions of electricity supply in greater parts of Alberton, the City of Ekurhuleni said the disturbance was mainly caused by a cable fault.

FOLLOWING interruptions of electricity supply in greater parts of Alberton, the City of Ekurhuleni said the disturbance was mainly caused by a cable fault.

The City said the outage was due to a 33kV cable fault which occurred during the early hours of September 10.

In a statement, the divisional head of communication, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, commented: “Unlike previous outages, this outage was not due to third-party interference. Unfortunately, cables do fail from time to time and cable failures cannot be predicted. The cable fault was located approximately 1.5km from the substation.”

He said supply on the 33kV network was restored around 11.30am on September 10 and the 6.6kV supply to the affected areas was also restored around 2pm.

He said the City had attended to calls of individual complaints and some areas that still had no electricity supply after restoration of the supply at main and secondary substations.

“Cause of these secondary outages can be attributed to, once again, a spree of theft of fuses out of mini substations and circuit breakers tripping due to inrush current when supply was restored,” he said.
