A route worth travelling

Two Alberton cyclists among others have decided to ride down to Cape Town from Krugersdorp to raise money for the Matla a Bana charity organisation.

ALBERTON residents Andre van Bavel and Dr Bert van der Walt, Xtremeforkids founders and Xtreme Cycle Tour members, will once again ride for one common purpose – a voice against child abuse.

Andre and Bert, among other cyclists, will ride from Krugersdorp to Cape Town from February 27 to March 9, with the Argus taking place on March 10.

Matla a Bana – a voice against child abuse, a charity project initiated and managed by the Callie and Monique Strydom Charity Trust (www.strydomtrust.com), will be the proud beneficiary of the funds raised.

At the end of 2002 Monique Strydom was asked to chair a task team that investigated child rape in South Africa. A need for an organisation, which could address all the grey areas in the child protection system in South Africa, arose and the Strydom Trust undertook to address this need.

This charity project was founded after Monique and Callie returned from a four-month hostage ordeal in Southeast Asia.

During their diving holiday in Sipadan (Malaysia) in 2000 they were kidnapped by rebels for 127 days. They had to run for their lives, had very little to eat or drink and were subject to many other dangers.

Callie and Monique’s lives were changed forever and both made a decision to stay positive and draw lessons from their adversity. On their return Callie and Monique decided to dedicate their life to the people of South Africa, to thank South Africans for their support and love. The Callie and Monique Charity Trust was set up in 2002, Matla a Bana (A voice against child abuse).

Andre and Bert are hoping to raise R100 000 and a whole lot of awareness among the children at the schools they visit along the way. The cyclists will make a pledge with the children to always report incidents if crime.

ABSA and Exxaro are two of the biggest sponsors. Exxaro sponsored the printing of Survival Guide books to the value of R48 000, which all the children will receive at the schools the cyclists visit, transport and eight bicycles.

A raffle will also be drawn and one lucky child will win a bicycle.
