THE City recently stated that it is releasing 56 farms at a value of R120-million to local smallholder and subsistence farmers, and this is reported to create employment.

As previously reported, the City will release agricultural farms to stimulate economic growth, create jobs and contribute to the development of emerging farmers while transforming the sector.

The rapid land release programme intends to improve food security, increase tax and revenue base for the City, expand food export and attract new investments into the City.

Some of these 56 farms will be released in Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Edenvale, Kempton Park, Nigel and Springs.

Job opportunities

In a statement, the divisional head of communication, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu, said the initiative will offer employment.

“Agriculture is one of the labour-intensive sectors that create jobs in large numbers. The job that will be created will accommodate unskilled and semi-skilled workers. Given the nature of the jobs that will be created, young people with no prior work experience will be absorbed into the labour market,” he commented.

He also told the RECORD that through this initiative, the City of Ekurhuleni aimed to specifically facilitate job creation opportunities for women.
