Amcare opens crop-growing tunnel
The tunnel made with the support of Atlas Copco, will help feed Amcare beneficiaries.
Amcare officially opened their crop tunnel which enables them to grow vegetables in a controlled manner. The event took place on November 14.
The project, which was driven in partnership with Atlas Copco, creates an environment that allows crops which are needed by the beneficiaries of Amcare to be grown in a manner which keeps it healthy and free of pests.
According to Marihet Infantino, they can prune the spinach grown in the tunnel once a week, and this will provide a healthy meal for the many dependent on Amcare.
Aside from spinach, they can also grow beetroot in the tunnel. In the future they will be planting other leafy vegetables.
Bongani Ndlovu from Atlas Copco said they are involved in the project to help deal with poverty and to protect the environment.
He added that the organisation understands the importance of nutrition, and the benefit the crops have for those in need.
They hope the tunnel will contribute to sustainability to provide not only food for those in need, but to help Amcare support the community.
