Material burnt at Brackengate Spar

Members of the community are burning material for an unknown reason.

BRACKENDOWNS – A community member raised concern about an ongoing situation which involved another community member/s who burn/s materials i.e. boxes, plastic etc. which is thrown away by SPAR (the old empty boxes and plastic get thrown away after the SPAR has received their necessary items or stock) in the same facility in Andries Street, Brackendowns.

According to the community member who reported the incident, it is an ongoing situation that occurs often since the member started noticing it last year in November.

The manager of Brackengate SPAR, Angelo Coumbaros, explained that, “The area allocated for the rubbish is accessible to the public and when someone has started a fire, boxes, plastics and rubbish bins are burnt.

“We have a pensioner who survives from the collecting of plastic and boxes. We are looking at measures to curb the problem of burning, but if no solution is found, the last resort would be to make the area a no-go zone and to not allow access and in doing so, stop the pensioner from collecting.”
