Help bring a solution to road accidents in Alberton

Many, like Tyrone Lessing’s family, who lost their loved ones on the curve on JG Strijdom Road in Mayberry Park, are urged to report such accidents.

Albertonians who may have lost their loved ones in an accident or have been in an accident on the curve on JG Strijdom Road in Mayberry Park are encouraged to tell their story.

On November 6, the RECORD reported on residents who are calling for people to sign a petition to get safety measures on the road in the article ‘Petition against ‘death bend’.

This is a motion taken up by Ward 94’s committee member Charmain Peense, of Environmental Health and Safety, who joined hands with Ward 94 councillor Marina van Wyk.

Peense urges the community to come forward and tell their stories of accidents they may have experienced at what they call a ‘death bend’. The stories will serve as supporting evidence to the petition, which will be submitted to the council during the second week of January, 2020.

The petition requests safety measures to be put in place to curb accidents taking place at the bend.

Tyrone Lessing’s parents, Allan and Charlotte Lessing, are in support of the petition.

Peense said a solution to this matter should be brought forward.

“I’ve heard lot of stories of people telling me that they either lost their loved ones on this stretch or at least knew someone who was involved in an accident on the curve. This is a dangerous road and we need people to come forward and share their stories,” said Peense.

In an interview with the RECORD, Marina van Wyk said: “I will set up a meeting with heads of different departments concerning this area.”

The signed petition currently stands on 746. To report any incident, contact Peense on 082 950 3541.
