Security tips for the festive season

SOS Security's Michael Bailey addressed home security tips for the festive season.

DOMESTIC Watch Mondeor meeting was held on October 8 at Sasol Columbine, with a speaker from SOS Security, Michael Bailey, addressing home security tips for the festive season.

He asked for the domestic workers to share what they learnt with their employers.

“Check that your alarm system is in good working order before you go away on holiday, and cancel newspaper deliveries.

“Close all your windows and doors and ensure windows have burglar bars. Don’t leave keys on the inside of doors or hidden under doormats or in flower pots,” Bailey said.

“If you are staying at home this festive season make provision for good outside lighting, but switch the lights off during the day, otherwise if left on it is a sign there is no one home.

“Never open the door automatically when someone rings the bell or knocks. Make sure the person wanting to enter is expected or known to you.

“A dog is a good early warning system, keep it visible but out of the way of strangers. If your dog is poisoned this could be a sign of a possible burglary,” added Bailey.

He mentioned for people who will be out and about walking, to keep an eye out and not to talk on a cellphone or to wear jewellery which is visible. Don’t carry large amounts of cash and keep your wallet or purse tucked away. Don’t hitchhike, this can be very dangerous.

The meeting was well received, with the domestic workers asking some questions pertaining to keeping safe over the December holidays.
