City of Johannesburg mourns death of Dr Richard Maponya
Dr Maponya was part of a generation that believed in comprehensive freedom in their lifetime.

THE executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, councillor Geoffrey Makhubo, joins all of South Africa in mourning the passing away of business leader Dr Richard Maponya.
The people and the City of Johannesburg are equally saddened by the death and grateful that Maponya lived most in and shared his amazing spirit with this great city.
The passing, at 99 years, marks both an end of an era and a reminder of the work that lies ahead.
Maponya was part of a generation that believed in comprehensive freedom in their lifetime.
While some of Maponya’s contemporaries waged in the political struggle, he led the charge on the economic freedom front.
“Whereas political freedom has been attained, the need to uplift all the people of South Africa from the bondage of poverty, unemployment and inequality persists.
“That is why the best tribute we can pay him as a city, is to increase our efforts to edge ever closer to his dream of economic emancipation for all the people of South Africa.
“As we mourn his passing and pass our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones, we also acknowledge that his was a well lived life.
“His greatest legacy to us all, whether in business or not, is the example of endurance, hard work and commitment to a vision regardless of the challenges ahead,” said Makhubo.
