Silverkroon’s maintenance woe

Residents speak out about the problems regarding Silwerkroon's broken lift and maintenance.

The woes continue for the residents of Silverkroon flat, following the latest breakdown of the lift.

Alderman Bruna Haipul visited some of the residents to hear more about their problems.

The lift, which, according to the residents, has been giving them problems for close to a decade, is a necessity for the elderly residents of Silverkroon.

This especially affects the people living on the second and third floor of the building, some of who are bound to use walkers or have to take an oxygen bottle with them.

There have been three cases of people getting stuck in the lift, which includes a lady getting an injury from having to be removed from the stuck lift in 2019.

According to Haipul, a new lift was promised to have been installed by January 2019, but a year later no progress has been made.

The new lift has reportedly arrived and is being stored at an unknown location.

Poor maintenance

Residents are not only unhappy with the maintenance of the lift itself, but also the maintenance of the building and grounds.

They indicated that various things in the building, like the lift, were in disrepair, causing either annoyance or posing a danger to the residents. A door on the third floor is hanging off its hinges and the residents are scared that any day, it could fall off on someone.

A gutter floods the walkway beneath it and water flows into the resident’s flats.

Silwerkroon’s two washing machines also broke down, and only one was fixed.

At the time the RECORD visited Silverkroon, a private person has taken it upon themselves to pay for the grass to be cut as the municipality has not been cutting the grass.

The residents described their relationship with the municipality as ‘trying to speak to those in an ivory tower who do not notice the plight of the people’.

Apparently, other residents are too scared to complain or just resigned to the fact that this is how things are.

Reportedly, work on the lift is said to start soon.

The RECORD has contacted the municipality for comment but at the time of going to press, no comment was forthcoming.
