Alberton Child Welfare’s director Zeeneth Domingo is part of the 100-day project which aims to provide support to victims of gender-based violence.

The project is presented by Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court through the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.

This task team will be able to reduce court postponements in order to finalise cases of victims. The 100-day project kicked off on March 5.

This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement during his State of the Nation Address (Sona) to curb violence against women and children.

“I’m assisting on the task team to ensure that victims get what they need in terms of psychosocial, referrals and services. You can’t just work with a court or just with police because it’s a holistic approach. It’s going to be training for SAPS,” said Domingo.

They initially had a two-day training programme which involved other courts from across the country where they identified goals that need to be achieved within 100 days.

Domingo said the project is aimed at targeting cases that should move through the system speedily to provide results.

“We often find ourselves having to sometimes refer people for protection orders. At least we now know that we’ll have a system through Palm Ridge, and we’ll be able to get that part moving. Through this project, we’re going to assist families to deal with gender-based violence,” she said.

Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court has been the only court in Gauteng thus far taking part in the project.
