Waylen van Wyk: "The important thing that I have bought since the virus Covid-19 became serious is books. I have taught myself to self-study and keep hygienically clean at all times."
On the first day after the announcement of the lockdown of South Africa due to the coronavirus, the RECORD / CHRONICLE / COURIER went out and asked residents, who were already queuing at the shops, what they were stocking up on and how the situation would affect them.
This is what they had to say:
Isaac Mokopane: “Buying enough food is essential. We cannot live without food and to avoid going to the shopping centre we have enough food in our homes.”
Mandla Shongwe: “Food ran out quickly but it is important to keep up. People need to make sure to include healthy food on their grocery list to keep them away from any disease.”
Reene Ozil: “I have been buying hand washes. We are in a season of checking our health regularly. I am also buying bottled water to avoid going to taps.”
Silindelokuhle Mthethwa: “Even though I have taken precautions in case I run out, I have made my own home-made sanitiser. It is important for people to learn how to make home remedies. This will also help them avoid long queues in stores.”
Thabang Ndaba: “Toiletries are the first important things people need to be buying in bulk. The situation is bad and it is nerve-wracking to see stores running out of stock. I am glad the president is ensuring that stores do not run out of stock at this point in time.”
Thapelo Nhlapo: “The lockdown will put restrictions on our travelling, but I believe it will help us to spend on important things for the sake of our well-being. The only essential thing I am spending on lately is my toiletries and medication.”
Delano van Wyk: “South Africa is going through a tough time and that is affecting our studies. But to keep safe we need to continue studying. One of the safety measures I have taken is avoiding going to the libraries and buying study guides to self-study from home.”
