WATCH: Convoy drive to honour essential workers

“This is our way to show our appreciation for the people working and helping us all survive during this very sad time,” Vicky said.

Albertonians joined in to honour all those brave men and women working on the frontline to keep our community safe – join in and make some noise.

Albertsdal resident Vicky Falconer arranged a convoy on April 6 in honour of all the essential workers working during the coronavirus pandemic.

Members from Brackendowns SAPS, local emergency responders and security companies got together to take part in the drive.

“I recently joined a group on Facebook and decided to get my neighbours involved. I made arrangements with Brackendowns SAPS and that night we all went outside to make noise for those driving past us.

The convoy is part of the #clapforessentialserviceproviders, which is a national group on Facebook.

“The purpose of this group is to send messages of encouragement to all essential services providers by clapping, cheering, playing instruments or blowing vuvuzelas, in essence making a noise, every evening during lockdown at 8pm for one minute to let them know how much we appreciate everything they are doing and sacrificing for us every day during this trying time,” Vicky said.

The drive continued in following evenings with the convoy driving to different areas of Alberton.

Members of the public stood at their gates to clap their hands and cheer for the passing convoy.

“We would like to thank the community of Alberton for their prayers and support towards all essential services,” said Sgt Linile Moloi from Brackendowns SAPS.

“To all law enforcement agencies and all other essential services working day and night to keep our communities safe, I can’t thank you enough. I think the Albertonians are very blessed to have all of you.”
