Houghton residents raises funds for SPCAs

“The care the SPCA provides to all animals is so critical to their well-being and I wanted to ensure the animals won't go a day without food and warmth."

In a time where he felt that humans are already receiving so much aid, this young man put his full weight behind a fund-raiser for the SPCA.

Prashil Bhavan (25) from Houghton had taken major efforts to up his skills through the lockdown. He decided that he can use his skills as a graphic designer to raise funds which he will split between die SPCA in Sandton and Johannesburg SPCA.

“I also realised that so many people wanted to donate but simply was not getting around to doing it.”I then decided to embark on this journey to raise funds from all of my Instagram followers and then to make a donation on behalf of everyone who joined me in my efforts on Instagram,” he said.

“I started the fund-raiser for the SPCA because I believed our furry friends were starting to be neglected,” he said.

“People are faced with such uncertainty and challenges where they may have to downgrade to smaller pet-unfriendly spaces. I knew that the SPCA would see an influx of animals that could no longer be taken care of, and that was the crux of this drive.”

He started offering graphic edits in exchange for a donation of any amount. “The response was incredible and people were sending me pictures to edit and the donations were coming through. As a group, we kept setting new targets daily and it was such an interactive experience for everyone involved.”

I posted daily updates, posted work which was done and then allowed all the donors to decide together on how we wanted to make this donation. “We wanted to ensure that any animal coming through the SPCA’s doors would at least have a warm blanket and some food to keep them going,” said Prashil.

The SPCA has been close to his heart after he had adopted a fully grown husky from them. Since then he has been such a wonderful addition to his home. “The care the SPCA provides to all animals is so critical to their well-being and I wanted to ensure the animals won’t go a day without food and warmth.”

Animals are so loving and they bring so much calmness into the most stressful situations. Without them, we would all be lost. “After the fund-raising drive, Montego and PEP got involved and he received discounts from them to ensure they maximised all the money they have received.” With the money raised, we managed to get about 120 blankets and 37 25kg of dog food, which was split between the SPCA in Sandton and the SPCA in Booysens.

The goal of this fund-raiser was to use passion in a way that would make a positive difference in the world by bringing people together and rewarding them for all of their efforts. I want to thank all the donors who contributed and to everybody who supported me. Without them this wouldn’t have been as successful as it turned out to be.

“I want to thank the SPCA for always doing such an incredible job at keeping our furry friends safe. I want to thank PEP and Montego for their exceptional service and willingness to be a part of the fund-raiser. “A special mention needs to go out to my parents, siblings, and my incredible girlfriend for always having my back and supporting my goals,” said Prashil.
