Fire started by 5-year-old

Aunt Grace Liebenburg was watching her favourite television show on Friday, January 9, unaware that her five-year-old great-grandson was playing with matches in the bedroom.

ALBERTON – When the boy started screaming, everyone rushed to the bedroom and found the bed and curtains on fire.

“The flames were high and the room filled with smoke. I called for help and the neighbour’s children came to our aid. People ran in from the street to help us. With the bed burnt out and walls and ceiling black, the fire was extinguished and my blood pressure was very high.

“I want to thank all the kind people who helped us, especially the unknown driver who jumped out of his bakkie to assist. I thank Clifford and his sons, Neta, Chesslyn, Bentia and all the neighbours. The culprit apologised several times and I have forgiven him,” said a smiling aunt Grace.
