Learners’ lives at risk

Children's lives are endangered on a daily basis by speeding drivers in Abraham Street who ignore the indicated speed limit.

“Surely children are going to be killed by the speeding drivers in this street. This is a downhill in Abraham Street, and the speed limit is clearly 35km/h to ensure the safety of learners crossing the street to get to school,” said John Botha.

Three years ago, a 10-year-old learner was almost killed by a speeding car. Due to a lack of speed humps in the street, many young motorists use the street as a racing track coming down the street at 60km/h to 80km/h.

The RECORD has reported three times in the past about the dangers learners of Stoneridge Primary are facing in an attempt to cross this busy road to get to the school grounds.

A concerned resident, A Kordom, staying near the school, said: “On many occasions I have witnessed the harsh braking of cars near the patrollers. Drivers are ignoring the speed limit sign and metro must do something about speed humps in the street. Here, death is dormant.”

Richard Carlese, principal of Stoneridge Primary said the school had previously sent in numerous recommendations to the metro, but until now, nothing has been done.

“We have just sent in another request, just before the Easter holiday, and will wait and see,” said Carelse.
