School opens without toilets and electricity
The entire staff and learners of Eden Park Primary School were welcomed to their first day of school by locked toilets and no electricity.
It was discovered that the toilets were locked with all sewage pipes removed. As if that was not enough, all the lights were off with electricians busy working on the main boxes.
An angry parent contacted the RECORD, saying: “Please go to Eden Park Primary and see how our children are being inconvenienced by the Department. There are no toilets and the learners are messing themselves and others are sent home. Why repair toilets when the school opens and not during the holidays?”
The acting principal, M Phillips, said that the repair work started on Tuesday April 7 and that they were promised that the job would be completed by Monday, April 12, when the schools re-opened.
“All the learners are using the one toilet at the grand stand on the rugby field and playground, and the teacher goes across the street to ask for a toilet. This is really bad,” Phillips said.
On Tuesday the power was back on and the CLD on site, Isreal Hlabane, promised that by Wednesday all the toilets will be repaired and fitted with new pipes.
“This project was planned for the June holidays, but the leaking pipes forced us to act now,” he concluded.
